#1: The Call
Shawn and I began serving with the Atlanta Dream Center Church early 2018. We felt the Lord calling us to serve the socially and economically disadvantaged in a way that intersected our lives with theirs. Praying about how to do this, we signed up for a community service call the church we attended at the time hosted each month. Of the service opportunities posted, the one called Adopt-A-Block with the Atlanta Dream Center Church sounded like what we were looking for. We and one other lady from our church signed up and rode together for our first experience of really serving those in need.
Shawn and I felt this may be where the Lord wanted us. We decided we’d go again the next month, but when no one else from our church signed up, we started going on our own. At first, we intended going once a month. That lasted about two months. Surely we could go twice a month, right? Well, that, too, lasted for about two months before we decided there was no reason we couldn’t go every week. Truth be told, we loved it - and still do.
Over the past few years, in addition to the challenges of covid, there have been some changes to the Atlanta Dream Center Church Adopt-A-Block program. But through it all, God has continued to send a small team of us to some of Atlanta’s most vulnerable and at-risk communities to show kindness and compassion to those we meet.
One of the things that helps us connect with them is bringing clothing, food, and practical items they can use. For some people, us giving them something may be the only interaction we have; although most are open to us praying for them. And as we consistently serve the same areas, we get to know the people in those communities, and they see we genuinely care about them. Resultantly, we have built some very special relationships.
However, as explained in the About Us section, we rely on donations. Sometimes, we simply do not get any. Other times, the donations are out of season, stained, ripped, broken, or missing parts. So, I just started buying and bringing stuff myself. But I can only purchase so much each week.
That is why I started Robin Good. Many people want to give but do not know where or how. So, not only does this bless the communities we serve, it provides a way for others to get involved. While we do not take monetary donations, any other support is appreciated! And for ECPC members, you may be reimbursed by the church!
